Toronto Pride 2004
June 28/2004

24th year of Pride celebrations in Toronto.

Some one million people watched from the sidelines as colourful floats and people made their way along Yonge, Bloor and Church Streets on Sunday afternoon.

The floats slowly made their way in Toronto's gay neighbourhood, into the downtown core along Yonge Street.

The parade brings $80 million into the local economy each year. It took 700 some volunteers to make Sunday’s party happen. Mayor David Miller was also present during the festivities.

The massive event, one of the biggest Pride Parades in the world along with Sydney and New York City, had 30 floats, 70 vehicles, 50 marching bands, and 12,000 people.

More than 250 gay couples have been married at Toronto City Hall and at local non-demoninational churches in the past weeks, including around 30 American couples.

There’s never been a violent incident in the event's history. That reassuring trend continued on this day.

The timing of this event marks the anniversary of the Stonewall riots in 1969, when New York police clashed with the city's gays and lesbians.
